These Items Should Never Be Stored on Top of the Fridge

Confessing to a less-than-organized lifestyle, the author admits their compact apartment often becomes cluttered. Like many, they have used the wide, open space on top of the refrigerator as a makeshift storage shelf.

However, they began to question the safety of storing items on an appliance that generates heat and vibration. This prompted some research into what should be kept away from this area.

Several everyday items are unsuitable for fridge-top storage. Bread and baked goods will stale more quickly due to the warmth, and wine’s aging process is negatively affected.

Cooking oils, medications, and fresh produce also spoil or lose effectiveness in the fluctuating temperature. Similarly, heat and moisture can ruin coffee and degrade the potency of herbs and spices.

Pet food can become rancid, and candles are at risk of melting or warping. Electronics and batteries may be damaged, and some plastics can release chemicals when warmed.

Additionally, placing heavy objects on the fridge can strain the compressor and potentially shorten the appliance’s overall lifespan.

This investigation served as a wake-up call for the author. They concluded that while convenient, this storage spot can lead to wasted food and potential hazards, prompting a effort to find more suitable places for their belongings.
