What Happens When You Eat Expired Cans

The dates printed on canned goods often cause unnecessary concern. Most labels, such as “Best By” or “Use By,” refer to the product’s peak quality and flavor, not its safety.

A can that has passed this date may still be perfectly safe to eat. The key factor is how the can has been stored; it should be kept in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.

The longevity of the contents depends on the food’s acidity. High-acid foods like tomatoes are best consumed within 12 to 18 months for optimal quality.

Conversely, low-acid items such as beans, corn, and canned meats can remain safe to eat for three to five years, or even longer, when stored correctly. According to the USDA, a can in good condition can be safe indefinitely.

It is crucial, however, to inspect the can before use. Clear signs of spoilage include bulging lids, leaks, significant rust, deep dents, or any odd odors.

If you observe any of these warning signs, you should dispose of the can immediately. Never taste food from a compromised container.

Understanding these guidelines helps reduce food waste and save money. Before discarding a past-date can, check its condition. If it appears undamaged and smells normal, it can likely provide a safe and convenient meal.
