FDA Issues Major Ice Cream Recall Over Listeria Concerns

The FDA has issued a widespread recall for multiple ice cream products from Rich’s Ice Cream due to potential Listeria contamination. Affected items include popular snack bars like Chocolate Crunch Cake, Strawberry Shortcake, and Fudge Frenzy varieties, distributed across 23 U.S. states and the Bahamas.

Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous bacterium, can survive refrigeration and cause severe illness. Symptoms range from fever and nausea to life-threatening complications, particularly for vulnerable groups like seniors, newborns, and immunocompromised individuals. No illnesses have been reported so far.

This Class II recall follows Rich’s voluntary withdrawal of over 110,000 cases starting June 27. The FDA emphasizes checking freezers for affected products, identified by specific lot numbers available on their website.

The recall follows two earlier food safety alerts. Alma Pak International recalled 400 boxes of organic blueberries after Listeria was detected, though none reached consumers. Enhanced safety measures were implemented post-discovery.

Separately, Mellace Family Brands recalled Wegmans Semi-Sweet Chocolate Nonpareils due to undeclared milk allergens. Distributed in nine states, these products pose risks for those with milk allergies, potentially triggering anaphylaxis.

Experts warn that Listeria’s resilience in cold environments makes it particularly hazardous. Consumers are urged to discard recalled items and monitor for symptoms like confusion, stiff neck, or severe gastrointestinal distress.

These incidents highlight ongoing food safety challenges. The FDA continues to investigate while urging manufacturers and consumers to prioritize vigilance in production and consumption practices.
