Doctor explains what it means if you always need to poop straight after eating

A doctor has explained what it means if you feel the urge to have a bowel movement immediately after eating.

According to a TikTok doctor, if this happens to you regularly, you’re not alone. However, it’s not because the food you just ate is passing straight through your digestive system. Instead, it’s due to a natural bodily response known as the gastrocolic reflex.

VeryWell Health describes this reflex as a physiological process that stimulates movement in the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract after eating. It’s not a medical condition but a normal function that helps clear space in the digestive system for incoming food.

Dr. Salhab explains that when food enters the stomach, it stretches, triggering signals to the brain, which then instructs the colon to contract. These contractions help make room for new food, resulting in the urge to use the restroom. The waste being expelled consists of previously digested food and water, not the meal just consumed.

For people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the gastrocolic reflex can be more intense. The Cleveland Clinic notes that IBS can cause discomfort, including abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and gas. Dr. Salhab adds that some individuals experience severe cramping and diarrhea due to powerful colon contractions after eating. Fortunately, there are ways to manage and reduce these symptoms.
