This Is Why You Should Turn A Bathroom Light On When Sleeping at a Motel or Motel

Travel hacks can make frequent trips for work or relaxation smoother. Pilots and flight attendants, who spend a lot of time in the air and in hotels, often share valuable tips. For example, pilot Ron Wagner shared a travel hack on Quora to help with sleep disorientation—a common issue for frequent travelers waking up in unfamiliar places.

Wagner suggests sleeping with the bathroom light on when staying in hotels or new places. This small light helps you see clearly in the dark, making it easier to reorient yourself if you wake up disoriented. Wagner recalls waking up in a pitch-black room, unable to figure out where he was or how to get to the bathroom. A light source helps prevent this confusion by providing visual clues.

Alternatively, if curtains don’t fully block outside light, you might not need the bathroom light. Even a sliver of light can help you remember where you are. Wagner admits that he still occasionally woke up disoriented, but the light made a big difference in preventing confusion.

Sleep disorientation is linked to “confusional arousal,” a phenomenon where different parts of the brain wake up at different times. According to Very Well Health, around 20% of people experience this, causing confusion, slurred speech, and disorientation, though episodes are short.

Wagner’s travel hack, though shared on Quora, is valuable given his expertise as a pilot. Other airline employees also share useful travel tips to make traveling easier. For instance, always keep valuables like your passport in your carry-on, not your checked luggage. It’s also smart to have an emergency budget in case things go wrong, like needing a last-minute hotel booking.

Bringing a power strip is another great hack, especially at crowded airport gates. You can share the outlet while ensuring your devices are charged. Writing down important addresses on paper, such as hotel details, helps in case you lose phone service.

Finally, flight attendants recommend traveling light and rolling clothes to save space. The military’s “fold and roll” method is especially useful: fold small items and roll them into larger clothing pieces to maximize luggage space. These hacks help reduce stress and make traveling smoother.
