In 2020, a couple named Shelby and Dylan shared a TikTok video that revealed a major difference in how some Americans and Canadians do their business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off-camera, Shelby can be heard asking: \u201cDo you rest in a restroom?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a good point. They both don\u2019t make much sense,\u201d Dylan adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online users jumped into the comments section, offering their opinions on the term they prefer to use for the sacred room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s called a bathroom, restroom, washroom and toilet,\u201d offers one user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A second follower said when they were visiting Disneyland, they \u201casked for the washroom\u201d and they \u201csent me to the laundromat!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A third adds, \u201cWait \u2018til he finds out about water closets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWater closet,\u201d as defined by Merriam-Webster, refers to either a small room or compartment containing a toilet, or the toilet itself. Historically, people used \u201cbathrooms\u201d to bathe, \u201crestrooms\u201d to rest or freshen up, and \u201cwater closets\u201d to relieve themselves. Today, names vary globally\u2014\u201cloo,\u201d \u201crestroom,\u201d \u201cbathroom,\u201d \u201cwashroom,\u201d \u201clavatory,\u201d and \u201cWC\u201d all describe the same essential facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern signage frequently uses \u201cWC,\u201d especially in international settings like airports or hotels. Before the 19th century in America, only the wealthy had indoor toilets, while most relied on outhouses. Over time, plumbing improvements led to the widespread installation of water closets, and by the early 20th century, bathrooms typically combined toilets and bathing facilities. Although practical, this integration reduced privacy, leading to the concept of a separate water closet within a larger bathroom for the toilet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online discussions reveal global differences in terminology. Americans often question why a public \u201cWC\u201d is called a bathroom if there\u2019s no bath, while others ask why it\u2019s called a \u201cwater closet\u201d if it isn\u2019t an actual closet.
