During an early February speech in Las Vegas, President Joe Biden spoke about his 2021 meeting with G7 leaders in which he had to discuss the January 6 protest and riot with NATO heads. During the speech, he confused current French President Emmanuel Macron and former French President Fracois Mitterrand, who died in 1996. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre then had to defend Biden during a press briefing, and that went less than well for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the Vegas speech, Biden\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cIt was in the south of England. And I sat down and I said, \u2018America is back,\u2019 and Mitterrand from Germany, I mean from France, looked at me and said \u2013 said, \u2018you know what \u2014 why \u2014 how long you back for?<\/em>\u2019\u201d Continuing, he added,\u00a0\u201cAnd I looked at him, and the \u2014 and the chancellor of Germany said, \u2018What would you say Mr. President, if you picked up the paper tomorrow in the London Times and the London Times said, \u2018A thousand people break through the House of Commons, break down the doors, two Bobbies are killed in order to stop the election of a prime minister. What would you say?<\/em>\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n So, on the February 8 press conference, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre was asked about bumbling Biden\u2019s gaffe and found herself having difficulty explaining it away, giving a less than compelling and quite roundabout answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The White House correspondent who broached the subject asked, \u201cAnd multiple times this week, the President in his public remarks talked about having conversations in 2021 with European leaders who were deceased at that time. So, can you give us an explanation into why the President was referring to those \u2014 to those people in those conversations and what exactly happened there?<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n KJP, responding, led off by trying to distract from Biden\u2019s gaffe and bringing back up January 6. She said, \u201cSo, I know there has been a lot of focus on this. I want to just step back for a second and just kind of think, really, kind of top level of what the President was talking about when he was having \u2014 as he tells a story about having these conversations with world leaders, which are obviously important conversations. He was underlying the January 6 events in 2021: what happened; the message that it sent around the globe, around the world to our leaders \u2014 to world leaders; how dangerous it is; our democracy \u2014 how important democracy was and \u2014 or is \u2014 continues to be, obviously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Continuing, she kept up the pearl-clutching routine, saying, \u201cAnd he was asked \u2014 he was asked when he was \u2014 after he was elected, when he went to the G7, he said \u2014 and you saw this \u2014 he \u2014 it was something that we were saying throughout that trip, \u2018America is back.\u2019 \u2018America is back.\u2019 And what \u2014 what was asked of him was, \u2018For how long?<\/em>\u2018\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n And, using the opportunity to say \u201cour democracy,\u201d she said,\u00a0\u201cAnd that whole story is just to reiterate, to really land, obviously, how important what we saw \u2014 that event \u2014 how important it is to continue to fight to our \u2014 for our democracy, but also, how important \u2014 how important it is \u2014 the United States \u2014 you know, their leadership \u2014 our leadership here in this \u2014 in the globe<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Continuing, she still refrained from addressing the question or the implicit question underlying it, which was how Biden\u2019s brain is doing. Instead, she said, \u201cAnd so, he never thought \u2014 this is someone who was a senator. He was a vice president. He has a relationship with some of these world leaders for decades. And he never thought that he would hear that. And so, you hear him say that. You hear him talk about it.<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n Still refraining from addressing that implicit question or even the gaffe as her answer dragged on, KJP said, \u201cHe \u2014 you know, another part of it, too, is how unprecedented \u2014 how unprecedented that moment was on January 6th when 2,000 mob \u2014 a 2,000-person mob went to the Capitol because they were lied to about the results of the election, because they wanted to overturn the election.<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then she finally tried to hand wave away the gaffe. She said, \u201cSo, just really want to make sure that we get that \u2014 that we understand why he \u2014 the reason he was telling that story. And, look \u2014 you know, look, as it relates to the names and \u2014 and what he was trying to \u2014 you know, what he was trying to \u2014 to say, look, many people \u2014 elected officials, many people \u2014 you know, they tend \u2014 they can \u2014 they can mis- \u2014 misspeak sometimes.
